Staining and Painting Your Swing Doors
When you are considering updating your doors, you have plenty of options. You can use new hardware to replace the hardware on the exterior doors. You can change the door handles and clean them. Or, you might want to just add a little more of a visual appeal by adding new decor. Regardless, there are some things that you will need to think about before updating your exterior doors.
The first thing to do is to take a close look at the trim around the exterior doors. This area tends to get a lot of dirt and grime, which can be unsightly if you don’t get it cleaned regularly. If you have trim that is decayed or completely bald, you should consider replacing the trim so that it is clean and in good shape. In addition, if you plan to install an interior door, you will also need to have the door trim replaced so that the door will open and close properly.
When you are looking at the swing doors trim, you will also need to focus on the molding on the doors. This is especially true for antique doors. Antique doors can be very intricate in their detailing, so if you have an old door, you might consider restoring it. While you are working on the swinging door trim, you might as well get rid of any damaged areas on the molding so that it will be easier to repair.
In addition to cleaning the outside molding of your swing doors trim, you should also take a close look at the insides of the doors. If you see any signs of insect activity, such as holes or signs of decay, you should consider repainting the doors. Before repainting, however, you should first make sure that you have removed all loose hardware from the doors. This will ensure that the new paint is going to adhere properly to the wood.
If you are planning to upgrade the internal wood work in your doors, it is a good idea to use a wood repair kit. The kits that are available include everything you need to make your door look as good as new, minus the wood repair tools. They usually include a door knob and a wood screwdriver, which make it a snap to do a quick update. However, before you start the process of updating your doors, you should first make sure that there is no damage to the interior surface of the doors. You can do a simple test with a flashlight by shining a light down the inside of the door and seeing if there is any distortion.
If you find that there is indeed some distortion in your wood swing doors trim, you should still wait until after the sun has gone down before doing any real work. The reason for this is that you want to let the wood to seal the wood before applying the stain. Although it can be done while the sun is up, it will not seal the wood properly. Once you have allowed the wood to fully darken, you can apply your new stain, and if there is any distortion you should be able to match the new color quite well. Although staining and painting your swing doors may seem like a huge undertaking, when you compare it to the cost of replacing them, you will be very pleased with the results.
